What is SSL Certification?

What is SSL Certification used for?

To ensure that your communication with your visitors is kept private and safe, SSL Certification is the recommended option. SSL stands for “Secure Socket Layer,” it’s a standard security technology to secure data between two machines, using encryption. This ensures that all data passed between the two remains private and secure. Millions of websites are using it to secure connections and to keep their customer data’s safe and private.

How does it work?

SSL Certificates use a public and a private key, which work together to establish an encrypted connection. Without that, a secure connection cannot be established, and data sent between a browser and a web server is sent as plain text, which can leave users vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves.

What does it look like?

When a website is SSL Certified, the padlock on the left-hand side of the browser bar turns green and the usual “HTTP” becomes “HTTPS.”

Why is it important to be SSL Certificated?

Not only does an SSL Certificate provide authentication and ensure that you are sending information to the proper server, but it will also provide security to both you and your website visitors.  In recent years, Google has been pushing webmasters to move to HTTPS encryption and warned website owners that non-secure websites will be marked as “Not Secure”. Additionally, SSL Certification helps you to establish trust and online security for your website visitors and improves conversion rates as Google is providing a better rank to websites using HTTPS.
